Zero-click search takes two kinds of clicks from you, and only one kind comes back. The recoverable kind sits below a ceiling you can read directly out of Search Console — the best click-through rate any query on your site earns at that same average position — and the structural kind is everything above that ceiling, where the results page answered the query before anyone reached your link. Splitting the two before you touch a title tag is the difference between recovering clicks and rewriting pages that were never going to earn one.
Subtracting the structural half is the least glamorous arithmetic in Contexta, the WordPress plugin we build on top of a site's own Google Search Console data, and it is the step that changes people's plans fastest: once the unwinnable loss is out of the number, the pages worth an afternoon are rarely the pages with the worst CTR. Every zero-click guide in circulation says the same three things — rewrite your titles, go after longer queries, win the featured snippet. None of them tells you which of your pages that advice cannot help, which is the only question worth answering before you spend the week.
Which lost clicks can you actually win back?
The ones on queries where some page on your own site already earns a healthy CTR at roughly the same average position. That is the whole test. If position 4 pays 5% somewhere on your site and this page takes 0.7% at position 4, the gap is a results-page problem you own — intent mismatch, a title that answers nothing, a snippet Google rewrote for you. If nothing on your site clears about 1% at position 4, the SERP is eating the click and no rewrite recovers it.
Use the spread inside your own position buckets rather than a published CTR-by-position curve, because the curve averages results pages that no longer resemble yours. Your buckets carry your niche, your brand strength, your query mix and, critically, your exposure to AI Overviews. The highest CTR in a bucket is the honest ceiling; the median tells you where you sit against yourself, but the maximum tells you what is physically available at that rank.

One honest limit: this needs volume. We do not trust a bucket holding fewer than roughly twenty queries, because a single freak branded query can invent a ceiling that does not exist. Strip branded queries out before you compute anything — they routinely run 20% and up, and leaving them in makes every non-branded page look broken.
Why is your "lost clicks per month" number inflated?
Because the expected-CTR term inside it is usually borrowed from someone else's results pages. The arithmetic is sound — monthly impressions × (expected CTR − actual CTR), which is the workflow we've documented separately — but it inherits whatever you feed that term, and a generic curve quietly assumes ten blue links above you.
Take a page with 40,000 monthly impressions at 0.9% CTR. Against a curve that says 4.5% is normal at its position, it is losing roughly 1,440 clicks a month, which reads like an emergency. Now check the ceiling: if the best any query on your site does in that bucket is 1.4%, the recoverable figure is about 200 clicks, and the other 1,240 were never on offer. Same page, same data, two completely different decisions — and the second one is the true one.
That distinction matters most when you are choosing between pages. Ranked by inflated loss, the pages topping your list are the ones sitting on the most AI-answered queries — precisely the ones where effort converts worst.
What does Search Console hide on AI Overview queries?
Not your clicks — your position and part of your impression base. Google is explicit that an AI Overview "occupies a single position in search results, and all links in the AI Overview are assigned that same position," and that "clicking a link to an external page in the AI Overview counts as a click" (Search Console Help, support.google.com, checked July 2026). So you have not vanished from the report; what has changed is that rank stopped describing where you were on the page.

Two consequences fall out of that table. First, position-based expected CTR is unreliable on AI-heavy queries: your page may be "position 3" as one of several links sharing a single slot inside a box, which behaves nothing like the third organic result. Second, because an AI Overview link only counts as an impression once it is scrolled or expanded into view, your impression base on those queries is conservative — you were eligible more often than the number shows. Google's separate generative-AI report gives you impressions with no clicks at all, which is useful for confirming exposure and useless for computing a ceiling.
How do you run the split on your own data?
Export Queries and Pages for the last three to six months, then work through five passes. It takes an afternoon the first time and about twenty minutes a month after that.
- Drop every branded query, then drop rows under roughly 100 monthly impressions — both distort baselines in opposite directions.
- Bucket the remaining rows by average position (1–3, 4–6, 7–10, 11–20) and record the maximum CTR in each bucket. Those four numbers are your ceilings.
- For every underperforming page, compute recoverable clicks as impressions × (bucket ceiling − actual CTR). Anything the old formula credited above the ceiling is structural.
- Sanity-check the losing queries by intent, because informational and transactional queries face very different SERPs — not every page is equally exposed.
- Sort by recoverable clicks, not by CTR, and stop the list where the numbers stop justifying an afternoon.

What do you do with the structural half?
Convert it from a click target into a citation target, and accept that some of it converts into nothing. When a query is answered above you, the remaining prize is being the source the answer names — which drives branded search and later, direct visits, but will never show up as a click on that query. Pretending otherwise is how teams end up reporting six months of title rewrites with flat traffic.
That work is a different craft from ranking, and it starts at the sentence level rather than the page level — the shift from SEO writing to GEO writing is mostly about making the first sentence under each heading liftable on its own. The honest trade-off: citation work pays in awareness you cannot attribute cleanly, so fund it out of the structural budget you already wrote off, not out of the recoverable work that has a number attached.
Which page do you fix first once the number is split?
The page with the largest recoverable-click figure, regardless of how mild its CTR looks. A page at 1.1% CTR against a 1.4% ceiling is finished work; a page at 2.8% against a 7% ceiling with 30,000 impressions is where the month's traffic is hiding. The reordering is the point of the exercise, and it usually promotes pages nobody had flagged while quietly retiring the ones that had sat on the list for a year.

How do I know if a lost click is recoverable or gone for good?
Compare the page's CTR against the highest CTR any query on your site earns at the same average position; the gap below that ceiling is recoverable and anything above it is structural. If no query in that position bucket clears a low single-digit CTR, the results page is answering the query before your link and a rewrite will not change the outcome. Why not use a published CTR-by-position curve for expected CTR?
Because those curves average millions of queries across unrelated niches and results-page layouts, so they describe a SERP that may not look anything like the one your page competes on. Your own Search Console data already contains the only baseline that is true for your site, including your real exposure to AI Overviews and other answer features. The curve tends to overstate what is available at a given rank, which inflates every lost-click estimate built on it.
Do AI Overviews remove my page from Search Console data?
